Do Tell! Have You Figured Out The Secret To Your Success? We Want To Know!

What exactly is success? I guess the answer to that question depends on who you're asking and what you're talking about. You might think of success as achieving a major goal: OMG I ran a marathon! My company finally hit a gazillion dollars in sales! Other times, you might feel successful and pat yourself on the back for small triumphs: I didn't order the pasta! I kept my cool in that meeting! I got these shoes on sale! With the right mindset, you can celebrate all kinds of accomplishments every day. But when it comes to how you achieve these accomplishments, do you think there's a particular secret to success? (OK, maybe ignore the example of finding shoes on sale. As amazing as that feels, it's more luck than achievement. Isn't it?) So is there one thing that you consider the key to success?

Well my answer to that question is "No." I think there are so many factors related to success. I've found it helpful to take time out and identify what some of these factors are — really think about what has worked for me and what hasn't. Sometimes just pausing to reflect a bit, putting some thoughts on paper and looking outward for inspiration can make a huge difference.

What's My Secret To Success?

So what has worked for me? In the early days of running my event planning company (you know, The Party Goddess!), I couldn't figure out why I was so busy, yet my bank account didn't reflect how hard I worked. After talking to lots of people and reading a boatload of books, I realized that I was billing for my time all wrong! Meaning, I wasn't charging enough. Duh! I had no freakin' idea how much time I actually spent on different projects or how to charge for my time or all of my expenses! So what did I do? I figured out a system that made sense to me and that accounted for everything. (And I later wrote a book about it to share what I'd learned.) Not saying that you need to do the same, but that kind of analysis made all the difference to my bottom line and helped me better understand my business.

I think it's also important to have a plan. Make some goals and figure out how you're going to work toward them. And then... work! Keep moving every day and even when you experience setbacks, keep going. Try something different. Take a break and then come back to what you're doing with a new perspective or a refreshed attitude. It's like running a marathon. You'll never reach the finish line if you don't keep moving forward. (Not that I'd know that personally... I've never run a marathon. But that's what I hear and it seems like such a logical analogy!)
