Keeping It Real! How To Set Realistic Goals!
Small business expert & entrepreneur Marley Majcher shares some favorite quotes and tips for other business owners on setting and achieving realistic goals.
I'm A Big Fan Of Goals That Are Achievable! You Should Be Too!
The new year is around the corner! (Just saying that in case December slipped by with you under a rock not noticing all the Christmas decorations that've been everywhere since before pumpkin season.) So with another year somehow under our belts, now's a good time to look ahead, do some planning and set goals for 2019. I have to practice saying that: 2019, 2019, 2019... When it comes to goal setting, the thing I'm most interested in right now is setting realistic goals. Because if your goals aren't achievable, aren't actually within reach, what's the point? You can do all the goal sessions you want, but if what you're aiming for is impossible, not only will you not reach those goals, but you may just throw in the towel and quit trying altogether. And I know you don't want that. I certainly don't!
So that's what I'm focusing on right now – keeping it real, people! If at all possible, I recommend that you try to squeeze in some planning time over the holidays. If December is too crazy for you, then put this on hold till January. It can certainly wait a few weeks. Just don't let it slide completely, because this is important.
Strategy For Success: Realistic Goals & How To Accomplish Them!
You might be tempted to choose some lofty, pie-in-the-sky, I've-always-thought-I-should-do-this kind of goals. I mean, if you're taking all this time to plan out your goals for the year, you may as well go all out! Go big or go home, right? Well, that's not exactly the right approach here. If you don't think you can actually achieve it, leave it off the list. Or at least keep it on the back burner till you make progress on some of your more down-to-earth goals first. Here are my top suggestions for goal setting and actually being able to check stuff off your list next year:
- You need a list! Write down your goals. This will make them more real and force some kind of commitment to them on your part before you even get started.
- Be specific with your goals so you know what you're aiming for and what you should be doing to get there. For example: Be more organized about my business finances. That's a good objective, but this is better: Track all spending and review weekly expenses every Friday.
- Set deadlines. Put an end-date to your goals, as well as – and don't forget this part! – all the smaller actions you'll be doing to get there. This will help you hold yourself accountable on a regular basis.
- Choose your goals carefully. Don't overdo it by being overly optimistic about how much you can accomplish. And set your sights on things that are truly important to you, not just stuff that looks good on your list.
- Give it time! By this, I mean that you need to allot time in your schedule to work on your goals. Think of it like an appointment and you're more likely to stick to it.
