Help! Work Sucks! What Should I Do?

We all need a little passion in our lives. Or a lot! Passion gives us our enthusiasm, intensity and motivation... our spark. (I'm sure I could launch into numerous spark, fire, smoldering metaphors, but I won't.) Passion also helps us cope when life is dull or it just sucks! A little daydream about your dreamboat secret crush can be just what you need to make it through the rest of the day. Of course not all passion is about people, right? It's not as sexy-sounding, but you could be passionate about a cause, a project, or making a difference in the world. (Although if it's George Clooney saving the world, well then that is pretty damn sexy! But you already knew that.) Maybe you feel this way about your job. If so, lucky you!

But I bet even you have days when you find yourself Googling "bars that aren't totally sketchy with happy hour before 3pm." And then you strategize on how to go there, but fool everyone into thinking you're headed to an important meeting. You even get them to high-five and wish you luck on your way out. Wait, what... you've never done that? Well, I'm pretty sure plenty of people have, maybe even me, because work isn't all rainbows and unicorns and customers lining up to give you money. Sometimes it bites, big time! And sometimes, the job itself bites. Not everyone has an amazing job or gets to do work they love. Sometimes, work is... well... just work, a four-letter word. If that sounds like your situation, you're not alone.

How To Find Passion And Be Amazing At A So-So Job!

If life at work is less than stellar, and the job itself will never be amazing, is it possible to still find passion in it? How can you become enthusiastic about a job you don't love or aren't even all that interested in? Most "experts" would probably tell you to quit and find something you love to do. Sure, easy peasy! Right? But if quitting isn't an option — for whatever reason — you can still find ways to feel fulfilled. I talk a lot about goal setting, especially for business owners. Setting goals is a crucial step toward achieving what you want and holding yourself accountable along the way. Goal setting can also be very helpful for someone who finds themself in a "reality bites" kind of job situation. This could be you, or it could be someone who works for you.

Setting specific goals and achieving them can be fulfilling in and of itself. When someone does a job well, whatever that job is, it can become a source of pride. Even if the work isn't glamorous, or if a usually great job is not so great for a while, you can focus on becoming good at it and improving your skills. Find ways that you can grow, expand your skillset and improve the skills you already have. If you feel that a job offers growth, you're more likely to feel engaged... and less likely to focus on what you don't like about it.

Speaking of negative, you also should make a point of avoiding negative thoughts about your work. Identify the aspects of the job that you're good at, the work you do like to do, the goals you have met, and the goals you're working toward. Then keep those thoughts in the forefront of your mind.
