Life Isn't All Rainbows & Unicorns! Some Advice On Dealing With That.
Oh life, so messy and unpredictable. Sh** happens. And then we have to deal with it. Not always fun, right? Last week, I was in a hurry to get somewhere important — if you must know, happy hour had already started and my friends were waiting — and next thing that annoying "check tire pressure" light came on in my car. Ugh! Turns out I had a huge nail in one of my tires (thank you very much, construction site down the street). Hardly the end of the world, but it definitely put a dent in — or should I say deflated? — my plans for the evening, not to mention my positive attitude.
So what did I do? I did like any thirsty, resourceful girl would do on a sweltering hot day! I took my car to the gas station, called an Uber so I could keep my date with the girls, and later got a ride back to my car with the patched-up tire. Problem solved, missed plans averted, evening still a success. Again, not one of life's bigger problems. But it was one of those pesky hiccups that could be just enough to put me over the edge into a bad mood. Except... I didn't let it. I just figured out a way to fix the problem, then resumed my previously scheduled entertainment for the evening. No biggie. (Cheers to the nice mechanic who made that possible!)
A Positive Attitude Is Your Best Defense Against Becoming A Drama Queen!
So what if, instead of a punctured tire, I'd had to deal with a work-related problem? A big problem, like an unhappy client, a payment nightmare, the AC going out (OMG heaven forbid! I shouldn't even joke about that). Hmmm... what if? Well, that kind of stuff does happen from time to time. Like I said, sh** happens. (Love how 2 cute little asterisks can keep me sounding so ladylike and polite!) But it's how we handle that sh** when it happens that determines whether something feels like a problem we can deal with or an impossible one. How we react to difficulty determines our ability to cope with it. Make sense? I'm basically saying that if you don't make a big deal out of something, then it's not a big deal.
I've found that one of the best ways to not get totally thrown off my game when stuff goes wrong (whoops, loving the asterisks so much I almost typed that as stu**) is to maintain a positive attitude. How, you ask? Remind yourself that life isn't perfect. Things will break. Plans will go awry. People will change their minds. Sh** will happen. When you anticipate the unexpected, you can adjust your mindset accordingly. In fact, problems will seem like a natural part of the process. And because you were prepared, you can tackle them head on, while skipping all the distracting drama, and then move on... positive attitude intact.
Be Oh So Quotable This Week!
I'm sharing some quotes this week about having a positive attitude and I think you'll like them. Here are two of my faves: "Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will." Couldn't say that better myself! And this one from Sheryl Sandberg fits perfectly with what I've been talking about here: "Option A is not available. So let's kick the shit out of option B." Hey, she said it without the asterisks, not me!!
