Are We There Yet? It's A Journey, Not A Destination!
I like to think of myself as successful. Pretty sure you do, too. I seriously doubt that you or anyone else likes to think of themselves as... hmmm... how should I put it... the opposite of successful? We could insert any number of descriptive words here, but let's just leave it at "unsuccessful." However, as successful as I am in my own mind, I still always feel like I'm striving for more. Maybe that's because the path to success is more of a journey than a destination. It's not always more money I'm after — though don't get me wrong, that is, after all, the most basic reason we work, isn't it? Sometimes I'm striving for something new and different, a path I haven't yet discovered. That's what makes work challenging, interesting, fun!
The journey versus destination thing sounds so cliché. We've heard it so many times, seen it on those inspirational-type posters that you're supposed to hang in your office or conference room (does anyone actually still do that?). But... it's true! Really, it is. I enjoy my work and want to keep doing it. Retirement? Maybe some day, but not now.
Curves Ahead! The Path To Success Is Never Straight!
And here's the other truth about the path to success: It doesn't go in a straight or predictable line. If that were the case, we could all draw our own map, with every pit stop, landmark and point of interest clearly indicated. Or we could just turn on our business GPS and let that guide us. I can hear it now: Hazard reported ahead; do not invest money in this venture! Before beginning the journey, we'd know exactly what to expect and when we'll arrive. Of course in the process, we'd miss out on all the interesting detours and side roads that end up taking us where we really want to go! Think of all the times you met an influential someone in an unexpected way. Or how often a setback ended up leading to something better.
Well that's a lot of metaphor for one blog! But I think the road metaphor is one that we can all relate to. The path to success hopefully keeps going and if we can view it as a journey — one big long road trip (think fun trip when you were in college, not the one when you were a kid squeezed in the backseat with no AC) — then we can enjoy it rather than asking every five minutes, "Are we there yet?"
