Is Being Rich And Famous Really All That?

Oh to be rich and famous. Or not. Every time I look online, there's another famous person getting into trouble for something they've said or done. Sometimes it's a dumb or tone-deaf Tweet — followed by all of Twitter promptly sharing its feelings right back. Frankly, this can be pretty entertaining, since the comebacks are always way better than the original Tweet. Who knew the Internet was hiding so many damn comedians? As with most things on social media, these situations blow over quickly. Wait about five minutes and someone else's foot-in-mouth mistake will take over everyone's fascination. Or if you're Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, the entire Internet will obsess about your Oscar's performance for weeks and give everyone else a break from the hot seat. (That performance and all the amazing comments never get old! I'm still obsessing!)

Then there are the bigger, more scandalous mistakes we just can't let go of. For some reason, college apps and that Varsity Blues movie are coming to mind. Hmmm... I wonder why? Could it be because that scandal was the perfect storm of rich and famous, greedy and dishonest? The stuff of Internet scorn and TMZ dreams come true, all wrapped up in one unbelievable, Lifetime-ready story. Mad as people were, they also loved it! Am I right? That's probably because we were given a chance to feel that we're better than super rich, super famous people who seem to have it so easy.

The Rich And Famous: They're Just Like Us! (Not!)

But do they have it easy? Living life in a fishbowl with eyes on you all the time doesn't seem easy to me. So when someone who's rich and famous — who has achieved real success because of their hard work and smarts — manages to stay on the good side of the Internet (and whoever else is watching them), that's an achievement all on its own! If I had paparazzi following me everywhere, I'm not sure I'd make it a single weekend without an incident that wouldn't need the help of a publicist to fix and explain. Seriously, most of my life is a “Stars, they're just like us!” moment. Just thinking about the last time I played golf, or my birthday party, or me in my driveway the other morning grabbing the paper... talk about photos I wouldn't wanted printed! All makes me glad I'm not that famous!

About those über celebrities who we do pay attention to... this week I'm bringing you some words of wisdom from rich and famous and successful people. There's a reason people like Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, Jeff Bezos and Reese Witherspoon are successful. So even though you might be running a small business like me, and you'll never have the Internet swooning over your duet with Bradley Cooper — or anything involving you and Bradley Cooper — you can take inspiration from them, maybe even learn a thing or two.
