Let’s Hear It For The Ladies!

This week, I'm bringing you awesome quotes from some fierce badass women and I think you're gonna feel the inspiration. Like many women I know, I have a squad of ladies who inspire me. They're always down for a Friday cocktail (love that!), dishing about the week and throwing some solid advice my way if I need it (sometimes when I don't even want it, but definitely need it). On top of all that, they understand and even share my slight obsession for shoes, so I don't sound stupidly frivolous or snarky when I mention the pair I'm currently coveting or comment on what the girl at the next table is wearing on her feet. (Except I don't actually do that. Really. Not out loud anyway. OK... moving on.)

So you see, it's a perfect relationship for all of us. We're friends, but we can also be each others' mentors, therapists, life & career coaches, Weight Watchers group, and personal stylists. (Think of all the money we save doing this!) All this life-help talk happens over drinks, on a hike or wherever we happen to get together. That's what I love about my group — we're there for each other in so many different ways, always looking to be supportive, telling it like it is, and rooting for everyone's success. I know many women have a group like this. Everyone should! I'm a big believer in the idea of a women's circle — women helping women — especially in the business world. It's tough out there and like the song says, we all need somebody to lean on! 

They Will Eventually Grow Tired Of Naying!

Owning and running a business is challenging for anyone. But we women often face challenges unique to our gender. Being able to share our own experiences or hear about them from others, along with being able to mentor or be mentored by other women, is wonderfully helpful.

“They will eventually grow tired of naying.” Ellen DeGeneres said that! She says to ignore the naysayers because they'll eventually get tired of naying (naying can be exhausting!). I love this quote from her. It's perfect for someone who's a little sensitive and takes everyone's opinions to heart, whether or not those opinions matter or are worth caring about. So remember that the next time you have an idea for your business or want to approach something in a novel way. If you think it's a good idea, if you make a particular decision because it aligns with your code of conduct or way of doing business, then do it and don't worry about anyone else. Even though things don't always work out perfectly, you should feel free to try your way. This is the only way you'll get to truly test yourself and your talent.

Get Out Of Your Box Once In A While!

Another quote I'm sharing this week is from Angelina Jolie — actress, mother, United Nations ambassador goddess, possessor of amazing cheekbones and a château in France. (Can you tell I'm kind of a fan?) She says, “If you don’t get out of the box you’ve been raised in, you won’t understand how much bigger the world is.” Damn girl, how true is that?!! I live and work in the same area I was raised in — and I love it. But that doesn't mean I never leave the ZIP code. In fact, when I travel, I usually go to places that are a little off the beaten track, or at the very least, not in Travel & Leisure's top 10 destinations.

In the last 2 or 3 years, I've been to India, Costa Rica, the Bahamas and Oregon. (Hey, I know Oregon's not exotic, but it's also not on T&L's top 10 must-see places. But I almost friggin' died there, so it's worth mentioning.) When I travel, I make a point of talking to people who live there, going where the locals eat, and generally trying not to be one of those tourists sequestered in the confines of the resort. Otherwise, what's the point of going somewhere different other than to enjoy the all-you-can-eat buffet? To find inspiration, sometimes you need to seek it out. Seeing the world outside of where I live has helped me both personally and professionally. I always return home from a trip with a widened — and hopefully improved — perspective.
