The Optimist Club: Are You A Member?
No one likes a Debbie Downer. Sometimes we like to be a Debbie Downer — everyone needs to vent and emote and complain now and then — but a little of that goes a long way in the company of others. Don't you agree? Think about the last party you had? When deciding who to invite, were your go-to guests the people who constantly complain about what's wrong with [fill in the blank]? Or, if you're having a brainstorming session to get some ideas for a new [fill in the blank], do you favor naysayers for your invite list or people who like positive thinking? If you want to leave the meeting with suggestions you can actually use, I think I know the answer to that question!
Everyone prefers working with optimists rather than pessimists. People who look for the upside in situations, who try to think of ways to make something work rather than find the reasons it won't. (That's your accountant's job!) These are the people we should surround ourselves with. The Optimist Club rather than the Pessimist Club. (I don't think that's a thing, although if it is, can you imagine what a bummer those meetings would be?) Positive thinking is powerful and can have an important impact on so many aspects of our lives.
Positive Thinking! Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life!
So yes, I just referenced Monty Python and I probably made you smile, right? Sometimes, positive thinking is what we need to rebound from a failure rather than give up, to keep trudging along when things are difficult. If you believe that there's a light at the end of the tunnel, that your goals are attainable and that you WILL get there one day, then you'll be motivated to keep going. Too much negative thinking will make you stop in your tracks.
As we're nearing the end of the year, it's a good time for us all to re-evaluate the past 12 months and look ahead to next year. It's also a good time to reset our habits (the good ones only!) and toss the ones that are holding us back. Make sure you add "more positive thinking" to your habit checklist. It's something you can train yourself to do, or remind yourself to do. A positive outlook is always a better mindset for positive outcomes than a negative one. Just like Monty Python said.
