In A Crowded Market, Find A Way To Get Noticed!

When the market's crowded, you need to stand out! Not standing out as in streaking through Trader Joe's (though you would turn some heads doing that), or holding up the line at Whole Foods to inquire about the provenance of the tumeric-infused honey. Obviously I'm talking shop, so I'm referring to the marketplace that we business owners are all in. Knowing how to stand out from the crowd is the holy grail of marketing. It's what we all aspire to do. Amirite? For many businesses and industries, the market is crowded and survival depends on being able to attract more customers — and then giving them a reason to stick with you. It's a combo of marketing, branding and specializing. If you can do all three well, lucky you!

Tips To Make Your Business Stand Out & Be Seen!

Let's first talk about marketing. How do you communicate with existing or potential customers/clients? Maybe I should ask "Do you communicate with them?" Do you advertise your services or product? Does your business have a social media presence? Do you ever send direct mail pieces or use online marketing tools? There are lots of ways to reach an audience. The most important thing is that you do reach out. Check out this past blog, an oldie but goodie, for more on using Instagram to market your business.

Next is branding. Your business should have a "look" that's readily identifiable. I'm referring to things like your logo, packaging, online and printed graphics, your physical store or office if it's a place your clients/customers see. Having a look that says your company's name, without necessarily saying the name, can go a long way to getting you noticed and being remembered.

Now for specializing, which is the thing that will really set you apart from your competition. If you sell ice cream and you offer the exact same brand, flavors and price as the five other shops on the block, good luck getting customers in the door. A super-stylish logo, signage and decor might be enough to get me to pop in for a cone. But then again, I'm partial to good branding. To get everyone else, a unique product or an offering that differentiates you from the other shops is probably the best way to stand out from the crowd.
