A lot of my fans, I mean readers (did I say fans, I really didn't mean to!), are entrepreneurs, business owners, head honchos, boss ladies, top dogs, you get the idea. Many of you are running the business that you started. So maybe the need to stand out at work doesn't feel particularly strong. In fact, there are probably days when you'd like to be invisible at work. If only! But I know not all of you are business owners. This week I'm talking about how to get noticed at work. Some of this may seem more applicable to those of you who have a boss — or worse, multiple bosses! — who you're trying to please. But it's also good info for those of you who run the show and have employees that you're looking out for.

So here's a scenario I bet is fairly common: an employee thinks they're doing their job well, but they're not really sure if anyone notices. I don't mean they're almost invisible — like Milton in that awesome ’90s movie Office Space that's become a cult favorite — just that nothing much ever comes from the things they do well. No promotions, not much in the way of raises or recognition. They do a good job, but feel stuck. Maybe I've just described you. Or perhaps this describes one of your employees — and you're the boss they're trying to impress!

Hey Boss, Look At Me! How To Stand Out At Work!

So what to do if that's you? How can you get noticed, without seeming like you're trying to toot your own horn... cuz we all know that can come off as a tad obnoxious? Identify difficulties at work and try to make yourself a problem solver, not just a problem spotter. In other words, be someone who fixes things rather than just points out flaws. Sounds good, right? Pay attention to how you communicate. Be direct, clear and honest with your colleagues. Not always easy, but no one likes surprises when it comes to deadlines, project outcomes or budget issues. Take responsibility for failures and figure out how to learn from them. Then communicate what you've learned or what you'll do differently next time to those who need to know. And for the love of God, don't be a Debbie Downer or naysayer! Being positive goes hand-in-hand with being a problem solver.

What if you're the boss and you want to help overlooked employees get noticed... maybe by others, maybe by you?! This shouldn't be too hard once you're consciously looking for outstanding contributions, winning ideas and people who go above and beyond. It might mean that you take a step back and pay attention to the quieter members of your staff who aren't always the first to speak or aren't constantly reminding you of what a great job they've done. I love the first quote that I'm sharing this week: Everyone shines given the right lighting. Just like a good director would do, find what that lighting is for different people and give it to them. You can also watch Office Space... and then just be the opposite of Bill Lumbergh!
