Life Isn't Perfect! How To Deal When It's Not!
Did you read my super embarrassing post about my even more embarrassing, humiliating golf game? Hard to call it a game, it was more like an extended clumsy, drunken golf lesson — only without the golf pro, not nearly enough booze, with an audience. Good times. Nothing like making an utter fool of yourself with people watching, all in broad daylight. Super fun. After getting over my mortification, I realized the obvious correlation of that day to business ownership. In my case specifically, it reminded me of my fledgling days when I was just starting out and everything was new and overwhelming. I felt like I didn't have a clue, which I didn't. But I kept at it, kept learning, kept trying. And eventually, I knew what the hell I was doing. This stick-to-itiveness is one of the secrets to overcoming adversity. (And online dictionaries are the secret to spelling stick-to-itiveness.)
If you can adopt an attitude that you're just not going to quit, your journey, no matter how bumpy, will be a little easier. You can start to view mistakes, setbacks and outright failures as an inevitable part of the process of achieving goals. So whether that goal is one you have in your personal life — like, say learning to play golf without being the laughing stock of the clubhouse (that example is totally random) — or something you're striving for in your professional life, you'll be prepared for tough times, failures and having to deal with adversity.
Improve Your Skill Set By Overcoming Adversity!
How you deal with adversity has a lot to do with overcoming adversity. Make sense? If you let it stop you, you're never going to achieve anything. Sure, we might get off track sometimes, do a little hiding out, but that's OK. It doesn't have to be the end of trying. Take time to regroup and evaluate what you can do differently. Seek advice from a mentor or friend who's been there, done that. Then get yourself back on track. Remind yourself that failure and setbacks are normal. Heck, they can even be helpful and give you a fresh perspective!
Next, start chanting your "Never Gonna Quit" mantra. Maybe do that one in your head because, well, you know that could be annoying to be around. You don't need to become that person, even if you are the boss. The important thing is to not let frustration get the better of you. And always remember that golf clubs not in a bag will fall off the cart. And "F" is for go. (Read about my lame golf day to understand those last two pearls of invaluable wisdom.)
