How To Be The Creative Genius You Know You Are!
Creative genius, entrepreneur & small business expert Marley Majcher shares thoughts on left- and right-brain thinking and how we can become more creative.
It's Not Rocket Science! Becoming More Creative Isn't Hard, But It Does Take Practice!
Do you describe yourself as a creative person or a numbers person? Artsy or techie? Left brain or right? Most of us tend to be more of one than the other. If we describe ourselves as creative, we usually think of being artistic, good with color and aesthetics, and having a strong visual sense — the right brain. If we're more of a left brainer, then we tend to be analytical, good with numbers and data, and rely more on logic than emotion or intuition. This is a commonly accepted division of duty when it comes to the brain. So if you love a good spreadsheet or can handle a cookbook without pictures, does that mean that you're not creative? Or if you can decorate the hell out of your living room, are you doomed to not understand how to balance the books? Can you be a creative genius either way?
That last question was kind of a rhetorical one, because... yes, duh! That's the interesting thing about the term "creative genius." It implies creativity and smarts all in one. Think of any new scientific invention or engineering creation and it's easy to see the crucial role that creativity plays. The smart phone? I can't even imagine how creative (and smart!) its inventors are! A perfect example of creative genius! When it comes to artistic works such as a painting or a musical arrangement, you'll find evidence of left-brain involvement: rules of symmetry and balance being followed (or ignored), or the "mathematics" of putting musical notes together in a rhythmic way. I'd have to say that the smartest people are definitely the most creative. Understanding that is a no-brainer!
Find And Nurture Your Inner Creative Genius!
Is it possible to become more creative? I think so! It's a skill that you can develop, even if you think you're not naturally wired that way. It just takes practice. Try setting time aside each week for some out-of-the-box thinking or exercises. This can take many forms: writing poetry; playing word association games or Scrabble; doing a crossword puzzle; picking a problem and suggesting unusual solutions; "inventing" a brand new product; drawing or painting; and thinking up new uses for everyday objects, which is a tried and true game in the comedy improv world. Speaking of improv, there are tons of improv games that force you to think on your feet and "speed up" your brain while under pressure. This helps develop a whole other type of creativity that can be useful in so many settings, from a cocktail party to an impromptu meeting.
Now what about becoming a genius? That's the flip side of the creative question. Alas, I don't know what the answer to that is. Some people do seem to be born smarter than others. Doing weekly crosswords and creating pretend inventions is never going to make me an Albert Einstein. Bummer. But it will help me use my brain to a fuller potential and develop my creativity. What I do may not be rocket science, but it's a service that my clients value. I'm good at it and anything I can do to become better at it is a good thing. To inspire us all, I'm sharing some quotes from Albert Einstein, a true creative genius.
