Go For The Gold: How To Get What You Want!
I talk a lot about goal setting. And not just here in this blog, but almost everywhere — with almost anyone. My clients, colleagues, at speaking engagements, with my friends, at happy hour. Yes, happy hour. I'm a hoot that way, a true party guest genius! I know how to read a room, figure out what everyone has in common, and get the conversation rolling. It helps if the drinks are flowing (for me, at least). I start with the basics: Are you from LA? How do you know fill in the blank? Where'd you get those amazing shoes? Once everyone's feeling chatty, engaged and knows I love their shoes, I take it to the next level with these doozies: So, what do you have your sights set on for this year? Are you a goal digger? You should see their faces when I ask that!
I know what you're thinking... BRILLIANT!! I know, right? I'm available for hire, by the way, if you want me at your next cocktail party. I can work the room for a while, be the person all your friends will ask about after the fact: Who was that lady with the to-die-for shoes? Or... maybe they'll have other questions about my goal digger inquiry... maybe, just maybe, because they might have mis-heard what I said. And I get that. Gold digger. Goal digger. They kinda sound the same. But if I actually thought someone was a gold digger, my conversation with them would be over & out ASAP! I have no interest in someone who wants to latch on to someone else's wealth and success. But what I am interested in is people who have goals and how they go about achieving them. That always fascinates me!
Shameless Tips From One Goal Digger To Another!
OK, let's get down to it. How does one become a goal digger? How do you go from "Here's what I want" to having what you want? If you're an entrepreneur, especially when you're just starting out, staying focused on the things that matter and maintaining a high level of action on those things can be hard. Setting goals is super helpful because it gets you thinking in the right direction. But goal setting is not enough. What really makes a difference is keeping those goals in the forefront of your consciousness. Sounds deep, but really, it's just common sense.
So, how do you keep goals in your consciousness... the forefront of it, to be exact? One simple way is to review your goals once or twice daily, twice being the better strategy: at the beginning and end of each day. And an even more powerful strategy is to have a regular — daily, weekly, however often — accountability call with a partner who will make you account for what you're doing (or not doing!). Find someone who knows you, who knows what you're trying to achieve, and get real with them on a regular basis. Might not always be easy, but it'll be worth it. I promise.
I also have a list of 4 questions that help me assess my goals and keep the conversation focused:
• What’s working?
• What’s not working?
• What’s missing?
• What’s next?
Then — and this step is super critical — make sure that all your actions, moment to moment, are in support of those goals. Do that and the magic happens. Do that and your results will be magnificent. You'll find that you've become a true goal digger!
