Confusion About Small Business Outlook

Are things better or worse for small business? It’s tough to say. According to a recent survey from Citibank, many small businesses see a silver lining in a bad economy. During this recession, small businesses have been able to gain market share, recruit high quality talent, and retain valued employees. About 40% are asking current customers for more business and for referrals. About one third are doing more networking with other small business owners.

However, NFIB, which conducts a monthly survey, found recently that small business is only “skeptically optimistic” about the economy. While there appears to be favorable expectations about the future, plans to make capital investments, hire more people and expand have not shown substantial improvements.
