Are You Cut Out To Be A Small Business Owner?
Small business expert and entrepreneur Marley Majcher shares some favorite quotes and thoughts on what it takes to be a small business owner.
Crazy! Good! That About Sums Up My Life Running A Small Business!
I talk a lot about being busy — more specifically, how it's not good enough to just be busy, you have to also be productive and profitable! Otherwise, what's the point of all your busy-ness? That's kind of the point of being in business isn't it? (Ever notice if you pronounce 'business' phonetically it sounds like busy-ness? I just did, thought I'd mention that.) And yet, I'm really stinkin' busy most of the time. It's my default mode as a small business owner, so I think it's OK to talk about it once in a while, right? It's not exactly a secret!
I juggle a bunch of projects and wear many different hats in one day. One minute I'm reviewing weekly P&Ls and the next I'm working with a client on their business strategy or event. If you own your own business, I bet that sounds familiar! You probably jump between different types of work all the time, from managing customer relationships to ordering supplies — the big stuff, the small stuff, the annoying stuff and everything in between. Cuz that's what we do!
I love owning my own business. I don't think I could ever see myself having a boss again, and it's not just because I like to be in charge (though I do!). Maybe I'm too much of a free spirit. I like setting my own schedule. Deciding what project to try next without having to get approval or permission. And let's not forget... directly benefitting financially from my efforts. Love that part! And because it's my business, when things get super hectic, it's not a problem. I'll gladly put in the hours, give up my weekend, do whatever it takes to get things done the way I want. It's crazy. And it's good!
Who's The Boss? (You Are! I Am!) Life As A Small Business Owner!
So, does that sound like your life? If you're already a small business owner, then it probably does! Are you thinking of branching out on your own? If so, and if this is your first foray into the world of entrepreneurship (good luck!!), how do you know if it's right for you? Well, re-read what I just described above and if that doesn't scare you off, then you can Advance to Go (and collect $200, which you're going to need!).
There are obviously SO many factors involved in launching a new business and you've got to do your homework. You have to research the market you're entering, determine your pricing, and figure out endless logistics of all kinds. Don't jump in blindly! But... entrepreneurs are kind of cut from the same cloth. If you can handle risk, responsibility, busy and crazy — hell, not just handle those things, but LIKE them! — then you at least have the right tempermant for this. Business ownership is not for the weak hearted. It can be tough and unpleasant at times. And between the long hours and worrying at night about pretty much everything, it can really cut into your sleep! But that's what coffee and concealer are for. The upside is that it can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling! As long as the rewards outweigh all of the negative stuff, then it's so worth it! The crazy can be very good!
