Getting Started? Advice For Young Entrepreneurs
Small business coach and young-at-heart entrepreneur Marley Majcher shares advice & quotes for young entrepreneurs getting started with their own ventures.
Wanted: Hard-working self starters for new business venture; must be enthusiastic!
Starting a business for the first time — especially if you're young — can be really scary. I've never done this before! But I still have college loans! Payroll? Has anyone seen my Intro to Marketing textbook? Yes, these are all valid concerns and there's pretty much nothing I can say to make them less real. How's that for comforting? And to reassure you even further, some of the worries that keep you awake at night may never go away. Or they'll just be replaced by new ones. How can I keep my clients? I need to make more money! What if no one reads my blog? But something young entrepreneurs have going for them is energy, enthusiasm and optimism, which can go a long way to overcome these worries. So if you're thinking of going solo, or if you already have, put all those good traits to work for you!
From an early age, I wasn't afraid to try something new. And by early age, I mean, like, four. I was creative and ambitious and if an idea could make money, I was interested! Having my own gig has always suited my personality. Who better to be the boss of me than, well, me? When you're running your own company, you get to decide what you want to do and how you'll do it. I rather like that. So it's not surprising that I've had a few different business ventures, as well as a few regular-paying jobs — in my early days at least. I've learned so much from my experiences, which have all contributed to making me a better business owner and entrepreneur.
Young entrepreneurs, take note!
Now, onto the advice portion of my blog! Let's get back to those helpful traits I mentioned earlier: enthusiasm, energy, optimism. These will serve you well as you embark on a new venture. You have to be excited about what you're doing if you're going take the risk of starting your own business. No one will be as invested in the success of your company than you. So be excited! Work hard. And work smart. That means learning as much as you can about your chosen industry and market; and finding a mentor you trust who can offer advice. Doing this is key for young entrepreneurs! Jump on any chance to learn from those who've been there, done that.
I'm a big believer in doing your homework before diving in. I've written plenty on that topic before! You've got to have some idea of what you're getting into if you want to succeed. But once you've done that, it's up to you to be the driving force behind your fledgling business. Think of yourself as both the player and the cheerleader (in whichever uniform you prefer).
