Oops! The Perfectionist's Guide To Imperfection!

Oh, the trouble with being perfect! Your friends are envious. People wish they were you. Life is a dream. It's so darn burdensome! You totally know what I'm talking about, like I'm describing your life, right? I'm glad you can relate, because that's been my life since day one! No one has ever looked at me and thought "Wow, what a hot mess!" Or have they? Hmmm..... well maybe once or twice, what with my crazy love life and wacky schedule and all. OK whatever. But honestly, I do have a wide streak of perfectionist in me that I'm constantly trying to tame. It's not that it's a bad thing, it's just something I need to keep in check so I can keep moving forward. This is especially important as an entrepreneur since I'm my own boss and don't have anyone looking over my shoulder (other than my clients).

“Let It Go” & Other Mantras To Help You Get Over Being A Perfectionist!

A desire to have everything done just right — meaning, the way you want it — is a pretty common trait among us entrepreneurs and do-it-yourselfers. That may even have been one of the driving forces behind you starting your own business. No one else could do your thing as good as you, so why not call the shots and get paid directly for doing that thing really well? Why exactly does that need to be tamed? Well, if you're like me, sometimes wanting to have everything done perfectly gets in the way of just getting it done. Sound familiar?

Have you ever missed a deadline on a project because you kept tweaking it, making it more "perfect" instead of deciding it was better to be done than to be late? Details matter and they're often what distinguish us from our competitors. But do you ever get slowed down by the details of a job to the point of not finishing or not moving on to the next stage? Do you have a hard time accepting that something is good enough, even if you imagined it better and more amazing in your mind? A "yes" to any of these questions might mean that you need to work on letting go of perfect and deciding that "good enough" is, oftentimes, good enough. Just like Sheryl Sandberg says, "Done is better than perfect." Besides, while everyone may love what you've done, only you know that it was more amazing in your head.

I always say running a business means the work never ends! Ain't that the truth? I bet your to-do list is a mile long!
