Best Thing I Ever Did Was Start My Own Business! Is Life Better After Becoming An Entrepreneur? - The Profit Goddess Logo

Becoming an entrepreneur is pretty much the best thing I ever did! (No offense, kids! You're great too.) I mean the best thing I ever did professionally. Not sure why I'm worried about offending my kids. It's not like they're glued to their computers each week waiting to read my blog. Ha! If only! But seriously, the best move I've made in business was to start my own business. All the good stuff I did before then was basically leading up to its launch. And all the good things that have come since then are as a result of that decision. So the answer to my question of the week – Is life better after becoming an entrepreneur? Most definitely!

I've always been a woman with a plan, even when I was a girl. I was no stranger to lemonade stands and selling anything my friends and neighbors would buy. Once I was older, I assumed that the adults who'd been my "customers" had been making sympathy purchases – because why else would they buy a shrinkie dink or an ill-fitting tie-dye shirt? But at the time, I didn't care. Money was money! Now I look back and think that sympathy purchasing isn't quite what it was. Those kind neighbors probably recognized, as I would today, that I had drive and spunk. They liked seeing initiative at such a young age and they bought my wares to reward me. How sweet was that?!! (Btw... whenever you see a kid with a lemonade stand, be nice and buy some lemonade!)

What Becoming An Entrepreneur Has Been Like For Me!

You probably get that this entrepreneur thing is in my DNA. All the work I did and mistakes I made prior to starting my first business were good training for what I was ultimately best-suited for: being my own boss and running my own business. So what has life been like since I started on that path? OK, here's a LONG list of adjectives that come to mind, in no particular order: crazy, exhausting, busy, risky, worrying, frustrating, financially draining (at first), rewarding, enjoyable, uncertain, freeing, creatively satisfying, interesting, flexible, fulfilling, challenging, fun, profitable, ever-changing, full of possibilities. I'm sure there are more words, but I doubt you'd continue reading, so I'll leave it at that!

I made that list in no particular order (truly!), just like I said. It was a quick exercise in stream of consciousness writing. So I find it interesting to look at the order in which those descriptors came to mind. Mostly the "negative" stuff is first. When I look back at the early days, that's what I remember most vividly! OMG the stress was enormous! And while those worries and risks haven't gone away, they don't weigh as heavily on my mind because I'm at a different stage now. A much better stage! As I achieved success, I began to experience all the positives of business ownership and that's what I think of first and foremost now. I think how satisfying it is that I can determine my own path. Choose the projects I like. Decline work I don't want. Start a new venture simply because I want to, not because my boss told me to. I am the boss and I get to decide. That's how I like it – and life has been very good as a result!
