Next Time Someone Calls You A Daydreamer, Say "Thank You!"

Dare To Dream And Anything Is Possible! - The Profit Goddess Logo Are you a dreamer? I totally am! But for some reason, that word doesn't always have the positive connotation that it should. My teachers called me a daydreamer when trying to account for my apparent lack of attention in class — and trust me, they didn't mean it as a compliment! Mind you, I worked super hard in school, but it is true, my mind may have wandered from time to time. What they didn't know was that I was dreaming about my life outside of the classroom. Probably not the typical stuff kids fantasize about, but usually something involving my next money-making scheme. As I got older, I dreamed about what I would do with my life and how I'd put all my great education to use. I also tried really hard to limit my classroom dreaming to the cute boy in front of me and save the big-time stuff for when I was doing my calculus homework... which might explain why I'm not exactly a math genius. But I am pretty darn creative! (Some may say I'm a creative genius — and I might even agree with them!) I've turned a lot of my dreaming into reality, so it turns out that being a daydreamer isn't such a bad thing! In fact, it's an awesome thing! So what about you? Were you a daydreamer when you were young? Do you still dare to dream?

If You Dare To Dream, Dream Big!

A lot of us creative types dream a lot. It's just that when we're in the workplace, we don't call it that. We have projects, deadlines, budgets — lots of serious business-y sounding stuff. Who has time for wasteful daydreaming? So we give it other names that sound productive: brainstorming, strategic planning, goal setting, making wish lists. Sound familiar? What we're really doing in those moments is thinking about what we want and how or if we can get it. Sounds a lot like dreaming to me.

In the last chapter of my book, I talk about focusing on your company's vision. In order to do that, you have to figure out what excites you, what inspires you, and what projects or types of work you feel passionate about. To quote myself (from page 152), "A successful business is based not only on what is most profitable, but also on what is most interesting and enjoyable to the owner." All of this visioning gets its start when you dream. So go ahead my friends and dare to dream!
